What is an online typing test?

Online typing test is a test used to determine one’s typing speed in a given time period and is available online. It can be taken up easily from a computer with internet access and a keyboard. Moreover, it does not require any computer installations. An added advantage of the test is that it can be taken up anytime from the convenience of your home, office, or a cafe.

Usefulness of the online typing test

An online typing test can be used to assess one’s typing skills in terms of words per minute (wpm) or characters per minute (cpm). Our typing test is termed as the ‘online language-tune-up kit (LTK) typing test’. It is a unique and  comprehensive test that is based on latest literacy research and many years of expertise in teaching writing skills to young children including dyslexic children. Its user-friendly features enable its usage in children aged 6 years and above.

Typing speed per minute
The typing speed of a person depends on the style of typing. On an average, an experienced typist is estimated to type 350 cpm, which is around 70 wpm. Touch typing, with all the ten fingers results in 250 cpm, which comes to about 50 wpm. Two finger typing leads to the typing of 140 cpm or 28 wpm.

Enhancement of cpm and wpm
Once you have determined your typing speed, you can work on the improvement of your typing speed by accessing our LTK online typing courses. The unique features of the LTK typing courses are virtual keyboard, graphic typing tutor hands, and inbuilt audio instructions that guide the users to practise typing efficiently thereby leading to an enhancement of cpm and wpm. By spending a few minutes with the LTK typing courses in a day, one can master typing thereby boosting self-esteem, confidence, vocabulary, and comprehension.

Improvement of typing speed in children with learning difficulties
The LTK typing courses employ the concept of touch typing, which involves the use of all the ten fingers. It has been observed that dyslexic children using the touch typing method over a computer learn faster with a sense of touch with their fingers. These courses are also based on the fact that children with learning disabilities learn with repetition of concepts. The LTK typing courses thus employ a multi-sensory approach wherein the students listen to the words through earphones, see them on the screen, and practise typing the words with their fingers.

Homeschool typing
Good typing skills can lead to greater benefits to your child in education and work. The LTK wpm test can also be used as a homeschool test to determine the typing speed of younger as well as older children. After determining your child’s typing skills, the LTK online typing courses can be used to improve your child’s keyboarding and typing skills dramatically with precision and accuracy.

Factors leading to the improvement of typing speed in children

☑ Children using computers for the completion of their homework have been observed to develop keyboard skills faster.

☑ Older children develop typing skills faster in comparison to younger children.

☑ Greater success in typing is achieved if it is introduced to children in later years of elementary school.[1]

An important thing to undertake during the LTK online typing courses is to assess your typing skills periodically with our online typing test. Thus, you will be able to self-monitor your progress in typing with the LTK courses. Practise typing with the LTK typing software

The language-tune-up kit (LTK) typing software is available online and requires no installations on your computer. It is suitable for use by students, families, schools, and homeschools. What makes the LTK typing software unique is the presence of a virtual keyboard, animated tutor hands, and pre-recorded audio instructions that guide the users. Practising typing over the LTK increases one’s keyboard awareness and improves their typing speed.

Typing lessons for children and beginners

The LTK comprises lessons that start from the typing of the vowels a, e, i, o, u followed by the introduction of simple rhyming words, such as ‘pat and cat’, ‘red and ted’, or ‘mice and nice’. The LTK employs a multi-sensory approach through which the students hear phonic sounds in the form of pre-recorded audio, view the spelling of words on the screen, and type the letters of the words with their fingers. Therefore, they get an opportunity to enhance their reading and comprehension skills as they learn typing.

Touch typing for dyslexic children

Children with dyslexia have difficulty in reading, writing, or both due to a problem with their short-term memory. The LTK typing course employs repetition and touch typing that are known to facilitate learning in such children. It could also be used as a typing practice application for children who have slower processing speed, which is based on the fact that repetition or regular practice leads to faster processing. When children learn through touch typing, the formation of letter and word images takes place within their brain and hence, they learn at an appreciable pace.

Improve English vocabulary with LTK typing programs

The LTK typing programs are based on assistive technology (AT) that aids learning in all children, including those with physical impairments as well as with cognitive disabilities. The AT comprises any tool or software program that bypasses a person’s skill deficits and instead utilizes another skill set in the process of learning.[1] Hence, a child facing reading difficulties would be able to improve English vocabulary through other senses, such as listening and touching via the LTK typing program.

Learn American English pronunciation with typing

English language learners (ELL) often struggle with the right pronunciation of English words. The LTK typing courses could be considered as a remedy for their speaking woes as the typing tutorial provides an exhaustive set of new and varied English words and sentences along with their right American pronunciation. Therefore, the ELL users would be able to improve their pronunciation, reading and comprehension skills in addition to enhancing their typing skills, which in turn would help in boosting their confidence and self-esteem.

Find English typing tutor on our website

An English typing tutor could be of great help to beginners in typing, to students with learning disabilities (LD), and to those with difficulties in touch typing. Choose a typing tutor at a typing center closest to your residence from the tutor database on our website. The benefits of finding a typing tutor are: (i) regular typing practice under expert guidance, (ii) working independently in a peer group, (iii) use of the LTK typing course to gain maximum benefit, and (iv) increase in self-esteem and concentration.

Online typing games to improve keyboarding skills

The online typing games offered along with the LTK typing courses are of great interest to children as they consist of fun factor combined with educational skills. The online games progress in their level of complexity in the following order, namely, games that require the typing of simple letters, games that need typing of simple words, and games that promote the typing of full sentences and passages. The online games are a place to implement the concepts learnt via the online typing tutorial. Therefore, it is advisable that your child first completes a few sessions of the online tutorial before getting involved with the games.

Dyslexia and dysgraphia are both learning disorders and are often confused because of the common symptoms that they share. Dyslexia can be associated with a difficulty in reading, while dysgraphia is related to the inability to write legibly. Both these disorders have a significant impact on children suffering with these disorders and could lead to anxiety, frustration, low self-esteem, and academic non-performance. The LTK tracing app is an excellent accommodating software for children with these disorders as it could help them in developing keyboarding skills and in improving reading, comprehension, language and writing skills simultaneously. By spending a few minutes over the LTK tracing app daily, students could achieve outstanding English language skills within a short span of time.

Sight words are the words that should be memorized by children to gain fluency in reading. Familiarity with sight words makes child to identify these words in single site without breaking the words into its syllables. The LTK phonics software is an excellent program to teach sight words to kindergarten children as well as to the first and second graders. It also provide outstanding learning outcomes in dyslexic children and ELL students. What makes LTK a unique program is the incorporation of sight word teaching strategies, sight word games, sight word flashcards, and sight words list.
